The Wændelingas

The Wændelingas are dedicated to a realistic reconstruction of the people of Mercia from the 5th to 7th Centuries.
Our impressions, the costumes and accessories, are based on archaeological excavations and historical research which is then carefully recreated by skilled crafts men and women. These impressions use the most current research available to us and where possible the impression is based on one grave or small local area, where this is not possible contemporary items from other locations within Anglo-Saxon England are carefully chosen. Our members are skilled in period crafts including textiles, leather, bone and metal working; we also have practical experience in archaeological fieldwork and museum work both nationally and internationally.

It is not our aim to portray the nobility or royalty of the period but instead the free people of community; the tradesmen, their wives and the local thanes. By using museum quality replicas and our collective skills and research we aim to bring the complex world of the pre-Christian and Conversion Period Anglo-Saxons to life.

The Wændelingas are available for hire to enhance your museum visitors' experience, historical promotion work and to present talks about the period. The Wændelingas do not currently provide combat displays.
